Dissertations is the regular plural of dissertation. Dissertation came through French and Latin from Latin dissertatio, related to disserere, “to discuss or argue.” Disserere contains dis-, conveying separation or distribution, and serere, “to join, arrange, or connect.” The history suggests ideas being arranged and examined in sustained discussion. The English noun developed the specialized academic sense of an extended written study. The plural -s is pronounced /z/ after the voiced final sound of dissertation.
