div
区分 / まぬけ
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
「区分」なら division の短縮形として、画面や文書を分ける場面と結び付けます。一方、英国俗語の「まぬけ」は別語源です。同じつづりでも、division・divide の仲間か、人を侮辱するくだけた呼び方かを文脈で判別しましょう。後者は失礼なので使用には注意が必要です。
Remember that div has two separate uses. When it refers to a section or category, treat it as a clipped form of division and connect it with divide. In British informal speech, however, a div is a foolish person. That insulting sense has a different origin, so do not try to derive it from division. Let the context decide: technical or organizational language suggests “division,” while a remark about a person suggests the slang insult. Because the second use can offend, recognize it but use it cautiously.

div の語源・成り立ち Etymology
div は二つの語源をもつ語です。『区分』の意では division の略で、ラテン語 dividere「分ける」に由来し、『まぬけ』の意では英俗語でロマニ語 divvus「愚かな」由来とされます。同じ綴りでも成り立ちが別だと分かると覚えやすく、関連語は divide, division です。
The sectional sense of div is a shortening of division, ultimately connected with Latin dividere, “to divide.” The British slang noun meaning a foolish person developed separately and is often linked to Romani divvus, “foolish.” Thus, the identical spelling represents two historically distinct words: one belongs with divide and division, while the other is an informal and potentially offensive label for a person.
