dwarfing は dwarf + -ing で、dwarf は古英語 dweorg、さらにゲルマン祖語 *dwergaz に由来する。dwarfish や dwarfism も同根で、神話の「小人」の像が土台にあるので、「矮小化する」は何かを小人のように小さくしてしまう感覚だとわかる。
`Dwarfing` comes from `dwarf` with the suffix `-ing`. `Dwarf` goes back to Old English *dweorg* and an older Germanic root, also seen in words like `dwarfish` and `dwarfism.` Because a dwarf in old stories was imagined as very small, the verb developed the sense of making something seem smaller or less important.
