eggnog の語源・成り立ち Etymology
アメリカ英語で egg「卵」+ nog からできた語で、nog は昔の強いビールや酒入り飲料を指した語と考えられます。つまり「卵を入れた強い飲み物」という成り立ちで、名のまま祝祭向けの濃厚な飲み物になりました。関連語は egg、語源説の一つでは noggin も近い語です。
Eggnog is an American English compound of egg and nog. Nog seems to have meant a strong beer or alcoholic drink in earlier usage, so the name originally meant a drink made with eggs and alcohol. Over time, it became the fixed name for the rich festive drink. A possibly related word in some origin theories is noggin.
