解説 Definition
古代エジプトの歴史、文化、宗教、言語、考古資料などを総合的に研究する学問分野。碑文の解読や遺跡の発掘を通して、王朝の成り立ちや当時の社会、信仰、生活の実態を明らかにしようとする。
Egyptology is the study of ancient Egypt, including its history, language, culture, and monuments. It is mainly used in academic or historical contexts. A person who studies this field is called an Egyptologist.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
biology, geology などで見慣れた -ology は「学問」を表すので、Egyptology はまず「Egypt＋学問」のまとまりで取ると覚えやすいです。pyramids, hieroglyphs, tombs, pharaohs など、古代エジプトを資料や遺跡から専門的に研究する場面を一緒に思い浮かべると定着します。似た形の Egyptologist は「その研究者」なので、学問分野名と人を区別して覚えるのがコツです。
Use the ending `-ology`, which you may know from `biology` or `geology`. That ending signals a field of study, so `Egyptology` is easy to connect with studying ancient Egypt. Keep it separate from `Egyptologist`, which is the person, not the subject.

Egyptology は Egypt + -ology（ギリシャ語 logos 由来の「学問」）から成ります。Egypt はギリシャ語 Aigyptos、さらに古代エジプト語系の地名 Hikuptah にさかのぼるため、「エジプトを体系的に研究する学問」という意味が形のまま見え、Egyptologist や Egyptian も関連します。
`Egyptology` is built from `Egypt` and `-ology`, a learned ending from Greek `logos` meaning "study." `Egypt` came through Greek `Aigyptos`, which goes back further to an ancient Egyptian place name. The word developed to mean the formal study of Egypt, and it is related to `Egyptian` and `Egyptologist`.
