Memory Tip
Connect ell with elbow: both begin with el, and an ell was originally based on part of the arm, roughly from the elbow to the fingertips. Imagine a cloth merchant stretching fabric along an arm to measure it. This also explains why the unit was commonly associated with textiles. Unlike a modern meter, an ell did not have one universal length; English, Scottish, Flemish, and other regional ells differed. Remember the practical scene—an arm measuring cloth—rather than treating ell as an abstract unit.

Etymology
Ell comes from Old English eln, a word for the forearm and for a measure based on it. It is related to cognates in other Germanic languages and ultimately to an Indo-European family of words for the elbow or forearm. Latin ulna, meaning the forearm or its bone, belongs to the same broad family. The measurement naturally developed from using the human arm to measure cloth.
