encore は、コンサートや公演の終わりに観客の求めに応じて追加で行われる演奏や出し物を指す「アンコール」という意味です。日本語の「アンコール」とほぼ同じですが、英語では追加演奏そのものを指す名詞としてよく使われます。

encore はフランス語 encore「まだ・もう一度」から英語に入り、さらにラテン語 hora「時」を含む表現にさかのぼるとされます。『まだこの時の続きで』という感覚が、舞台で『もう一度』を求めるアンコールになり、関連語に hour, horary があります。
English borrowed encore from French, where it means “again,” “still,” or “more.” The French word developed from a phrase ultimately associated with Latin expressions involving hanc horam, “to this hour,” although the deeper history is complex. In English theatrical use, it first represented a call for repetition and then came to name the additional performance given in response. Its modern concert sense preserves the basic idea of “again” or “more.”
