encouraging は encourage（励ます、促す）の現在分詞からできた形で、「励みになる」「勇気づける」という意味の形容詞です。人を直接励ます場合だけでなく、結果や知らせが希望を持たせる場合にも使います。
Something encouraging gives a person confidence, hope, or a reason to expect improvement. The adjective can describe supportive words or actions, as well as favorable signs, news, or results that make a situation seem more promising.

Start with the verb encourage, “to give someone courage or confidence.” To form encouraging, drop the final silent e and add -ing. As an adjective, it describes the person, message, result, or sign that produces hope: encouraging words support someone, while encouraging test results suggest that things may improve. Contrast it with encouraged, which describes the receiver’s feeling. If the news creates hope, the news is encouraging; if you gain hope from it, you are encouraged. This cause-versus-feeling contrast is useful for many -ing and -ed adjectives.

encouraging は encourage から来ており、古フランス語 encoragier に由来します。en-「〜にする」＋ courage「心・勇気」で、courage はラテン語 cor「心」にさかのぼるため、「心に力を入れるような」から「励ますような」の意味になります。
Encouraging is formed from encourage by dropping the final e and adding the suffix -ing. Encourage entered English through Old French encoragier, built from a prefix meaning “to put into” and corage, “heart, spirit, or courage.” Courage ultimately traces to Latin cor, “heart.” The word therefore developed from the idea of putting heart or confidence into someone; the adjective describes whatever produces that effect.
