覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

escalated は escalate の過去形・過去分詞で、ここでは「段階的に激化・深刻化した」という状態を表します。原形が e で終わるため、その e を落として -ed を付けます。escalator が上へ運ぶ映像と結び付け、escalated tensions、violence、costs のように程度が一段ずつ上がる場面で覚えましょう。語尾 -ed は /ɪd/ です。

Escalated is the past participle of escalate and often describes a situation after it has grown more serious or intense. Form it by dropping the final e of escalate before adding -ed. Link it with escalator: imagine tensions, costs, or violence being carried upward one level at a time. Common combinations include escalated tensions and an argument that escalated into violence. Increased is neutral, but escalated often suggests an unwelcome rise and worsening control. Since escalate ends in /t/, the -ed ending is pronounced /ɪd/.

escalated の語源・成り立ち Etymology

escalated は escalate の過去分詞形で、語源はフランス語 escalade、イタリア語 scalata、さらにラテン語 scala「はしご」にさかのぼります。はしごを一段ずつ上るイメージから、事態が段階的に高まることを表すようになりました。関連語は escalator, scale。

Escalated is the past participle of escalate. Escalate was formed in English from escalade, a word for climbing defensive walls with ladders, borrowed through French from Italian scalata. These forms are related to Latin scala, “ladder” or “staircase.” The physical image of climbing upward by stages gave rise to the modern figurative sense of increasing in intensity, seriousness, or extent.
