覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
原形 escape の語末の e を落として -ing を付け、escape → escaping となります。escape from a room「部屋から逃げる」、escape a fire「火事を逃れる」が典型です。run away はその場から走り去る日常的表現ですが、escape は危険・拘束・不快な状況から抜け出すことに焦点があります。
Form escaping by dropping the silent final e of escape before adding -ing: escape becomes escaping. Picture movement out of danger or confinement, as in escaping from a dark room or escaping a fire. Escape from is common when the starting place or controlling situation is named, while some dangers can follow escape directly. Run away often emphasizes leaving or fleeing, but escape stresses successfully getting free from something restrictive or dangerous. The historical word has been associated with getting out of a cloak, reinforcing the image of slipping free from what holds you.

escaping の語源・成り立ち Etymology
escapingはescapeに進行・動名詞の-ingが付いた形で、escapeは古フランス語eschaper、さらに俗ラテン語*excappareに由来します。ex-「外へ」+cappa「マント」で、追っ手にマントだけ残して抜け出すイメージから「逃げる」になり、capやcapeも同系です。
Escaping is formed from escape by dropping final e and adding -ing. Escape came through Old French eschaper from a Vulgar Latin form reconstructed as excappare. It combines ex-, “out of,” with cappa, “cloak” or “cape.” The traditional underlying image is getting out of one’s cloak, perhaps leaving it behind while fleeing. The meaning broadened to getting free from custody, danger, or an unwanted condition.
