解説 Definition
供託とは、第三者である公的機関に金銭や有価証券を預けることで、取引の安全性を確保する法的な仕組みです。相手方が義務を果たさない懸念があるときに、資金や書類を一定期間保全し、当事者双方を守ります。契約の条件が満たされたら、保管先から当該金銭や有価証券が払い戻されます。
Escrow is an arrangement in which money or documents are kept by a trusted third party until certain conditions are met. It is commonly used in business and property deals to protect both sides before the agreement is completed.

英語 escrow は古フランス語 escroe／escroue（証書・巻物）を経て入った語。契約金を第三者に預ける際、証書を添えたことから「預託・供託」の意味になり、scroll も関連語とされる。
Escrow came into English from Old French escroe or escroue, meaning a scroll or legal document. It was first linked to deeds or papers held while an agreement was being completed.
