estimating は estimate に -ing が付いた形で、語源は古フランス語 estimer、さらにラテン語 aestimare「価値を量る」です。もともと“値打ちを見定める”語なので、そこから金額や数量を「見積もる」意味が自然に出ました。関連語は esteem, estimation です。
Estimating is the -ing form of estimate, created by dropping the final e before adding -ing. Estimate entered English through Latin aestimare, meaning “to value, assess, or appraise,” with influence from French estimer. Its earlier association with judging value developed naturally into the modern sense of calculating an approximate cost, quantity, or likelihood.
