expoundの進行形で、語源はラテン語 exponere（外へ ex-＋置く ponere）を経た古フランス語。『中身を人前に並べて見せる』感覚から『詳しく解説する』となり、関連語に expose, expository がある。
Expounding is the -ing form of expound, which came through Old French from Latin exponere, meaning "to put out" or "set forth." It is made from ex- "out" and ponere "to place." The idea shifted from laying something out in front of others to explaining it fully; related words include expose and expository.
