felting は felt「フェルト」+ -ing で、felt は古英語 felt、さらにゲルマン祖語系の「圧して繊維を固めた布」に由来する。felted や feltwork と同じ基盤をもち、織るのでなく毛を絡ませて固める作り方そのものが「フェルト加工」の意味を支えている。
