matting には語義に応じて二つの由来がある。床に敷くマット材の意味は mat「敷物」+ -ing で、mat は古英語を経て後期ラテン語 matta「むしろ、ござ」にさかのぼる。一方、額装用の台紙・縁取りの意味は、フランス語 mat「光沢のない」に由来する額装語 mat / matte と関係する。
