Volcanism is the activity and processes connected with volcanoes, including the movement of magma, eruptions, and the formation of volcanic rocks. It is mainly used in geology and earth science when describing how volcanoes affect the earth's surface.

volcanism は volcano「火山」に -ism が付いた語で、volcano はローマ神話の火の神 Vulcanus に由来します。vulcanize も同じ名から来ており、「火と鍛冶の神の働き」と重ねると、地中の熱が噴き出す火山活動を表す語だと印象づけられます。
Volcanism comes from volcano with the ending -ism. Volcano comes from Vulcanus, the Roman god of fire and metalworking, whose name became linked with fiery mountains. From that background, volcanism developed as the term for volcanic activity and the processes connected with it; vulcanize comes from the same name.
