cooing は coo「クークー鳴く」に -ing が付いた形で、coo 自体が鳩の声をまねた擬音語。つまり意味の芯は語源の説明より音そのもので、やわらかく丸い響きが甘いささやきや乳児の喃語にも広がった。coo や cuckoo に同じ音まねの感覚がある。
