Tempera is a type of paint made by mixing color with a substance such as egg, and it also refers to the style of painting done with this paint. It is used mainly in art history and painting. Tempera dries quickly and was common before oil painting became popular.

tempera は美術用語として単独暗記するより、temper / temperature などの temper- を見たときの「加減して整える」感覚と結びつけると残りやすい。顔料を卵黄で混ぜ、絵の具を“ちょうどよい状態に整える”技法だとイメージする。oil painting の厚塗りより乾きが早く、細密な宗教画や初期ルネサンス作品で使われる場面と一緒に覚えると定着しやすい。fresco と違い、壁そのものではなく絵の具・技法の名でもある点にも注意。

temperaはラテン語 temperare「ほどよく混ぜる・調整する」が語源。temper- は「適度に整える」感覚で、temperature や temper と同根だから、顔料を卵や膠でちょうどよく混ぜて作る絵具だと腑に落ちる。
