解説 Definition
「plait」は、髪、糸、ひも、わらなどを何本かに分け、交互に編んで作った三つ編みや編み込みを指す名詞です。髪形についても、材料を編んで作る帯状の部分についても使われ、主にイギリス英語でよく見られる語です。
A plait is a piece of hair or other material made by crossing several parts over each other in a regular pattern. It is commonly used for hairstyles and sometimes for ropes or straw. In American English, "braid" is more common.

plait は古フランス語 pleit を経て、ラテン語 plicare「折る・たたむ」に由来します。語幹 plic- は duplicate や triplicate にも見られ、編み込みが「何度も折って重ねる」動きから名づけられたと気づくと意味が締まります。
Plait came through Old French pleit from Latin plicare, meaning to fold. The same root appears in English words like duplicate and triplicate. Its meaning developed from the idea of folding and layering into the idea of braiding strands together.
