pigtail は pig「豚」+ tail「しっぽ」の複合語で、もとは豚の尾のように細くねじれた形をそのまま表しました。まず撚ったたばこ束を指し、その比喩が髪形へ移った語で、ponytail も同じ見立ての仲間です。
