feria はラテン語 feria／複数形 feriae「祭日・休みの日」に由来します。教会ラテン語では日曜の後の平日を数える語になり、ferial や fair と同根なので、「本来は祝日なのに暦上の平日を指す」経緯が見えてきます。
Feria comes from Latin feria, more often used in the plural feriae, meaning "festival days" or "days of rest." In Church Latin, it later became a way to number the weekdays after Sunday, so a word that first meant a holiday came to be used for ordinary days in the church calendar. It is related to English ferial, and also to fair in its older sense of a festival or market day.
