布やロープの端が少しずつほどけて繊維が乱れることを表す。そこから比喩的に、神経・人間関係・外交関係などが緊張や疲労によって徐々に傷み、まとまりや安定が失われていくことにも使われる。物理的にも比喩的にも使われる語である。
Fraying describes something becoming worn or coming apart at the edges, especially cloth, rope, or another material. It can also be used figuratively for nerves, tempers, or relationships that are becoming strained or less stable.

Think of a cloth edge slowly coming apart thread by thread. That is different from a sudden break or tear: fraying is gradual damage. Be careful not to confuse it with frying, which looks similar but is about cooking.
