Friction is the resistance that happens when two surfaces rub against each other. In a wider sense, it can also mean tension or disagreement between people, groups, or ideas. The physical meaning is common in science, and the social meaning is common in everyday English.

「friction」はラテン語 fricare「こする」から来た frictio「摩擦」が語源です。fricative や frictional も同根で、表面どうしがこすれて進みを妨げる感覚が、そのまま物理的・比喩的な「摩擦」につながる。
Friction comes from Latin frictio, from fricare meaning "to rub." At first it referred to the act of rubbing surfaces together. From that physical idea, it came to mean resistance between surfaces and later also tension between people or groups. Related words include fricative and frictional.
