fraction はラテン語 fractio「砕くこと」から来ており、動詞 frangere「壊す、割る」に由来します。語根 fract- には「割れてできた一部分」の感覚があるため、全体を分けて得た「分数・端数」という意味になりました。fracture や fragment も同根です。
Fraction comes from Latin fractio, meaning "a breaking," from the verb frangere, "to break." The same root appears in fracture and fragment. Because a fraction is a part broken off from a whole, the word came to mean a divided part or number.
