freediving は free + diving から成る現代英語で、free は古英語 freo「束縛されない」、dive は古英語 dufan「潜る」にさかのぼります。呼吸装置に頼らず自力で潜る競技だと見ると、freedom や diver とつながって語の像がはっきりします。
Freediving is a modern English compound of free and diving. Free comes from Old English freo, "not bound," and dive goes back to Old English dufan, "to sink or dive." The name grew from the idea of diving by one's own power, without being tied to outside breathing equipment.
