解説 Definition
freeway は、主にアメリカ英語で使われる「高速道路・自動車専用道路」で、出入口が制限されています。必ずしも無料の道路を意味しません。
A freeway is a major high-speed road designed for motor vehicles, with controlled access and usually no intersections at the same level. The term is especially common in American English and does not necessarily mean that drivers pay no toll.

free（自由な、妨げのない）+ way（道）の複合語で、1930年ごろアメリカ英語で成立しました。ここでの free は、交差点や沿道からの出入り、歩行者などに妨げられず車が流れることを表し、通行料が無料という意味ではありません。free と freedom は同系ですが、freeze とは別語源です。
Freeway is an American English compound of free and way that appeared around 1930. In the term as originally proposed, free referred to freedom from grade intersections, private entrances, pedestrians, and other obstacles, allowing traffic to flow without interruption. It did not mean that the road was necessarily free of tolls.
