フランス語 route から。語源はラテン語 rupta via（切り開かれた道）で、rumpere（破る）の過去分詞 rupta に由来する。関連語：routine（決まった道筋→日課）、rupture（破裂）。道を「切り拓く」イメージが「経路」の意味につながっている。
English route came through French route from the Latin expression rupta via, meaning a road opened or broken through. Rupta is the feminine past participle of rumpere, “to break,” agreeing with via, “way” or “road.” The historical image is therefore that of a path cleared through difficult ground. The word later developed the broader modern sense of an established or chosen course between places.
