gaskin は語源不詳ですが、英語の衣服名 galligaskins「だぶついたズボン」の短縮とされ、その語はフランス語・スペイン語系にさかのぼる説があります。関連語 galligaskins に同じ核が残り、馬の後脚上部を指すのは、ふくらんだズボンの脚部になぞらえたと見ると意味がつながります。
Gaskin has an uncertain origin, but it is usually treated as a shortened form of galligaskins, an old English word for loose, puffed trousers. That longer word may have come through French or Spanish forms. The meaning later shifted to the upper part of a horse's hind leg, probably because the shape was compared to the swollen leg of such trousers.
