まず土台は general「一般的な」。そこに -ise/-ize が付くと「〜化する」なので generalise は「一般化する」、さらに -ation で動作・結果を表す名詞になり generalisation「一般化」。specific「個別の」と対で覚えると定着しやすいです。研究や議論では make a generalisation / avoid overgeneralisation の形でよく出て、「少数の例から広い結論へ広げること」という場面を思い浮かべると意味がぶれません。英米で綴りが generalisation / generalization と分かれる点にも注意。
