ジニーとは、アラビアの伝説に登場する魔法の精霊や魔神のことです。瓶やランプに封じ込められており、解放された者の願いを叶えると言われています。西洋文化では「アラジン」の物語などで広く知られています。

genie はフランス語 génie から入り、さらにラテン語 genius「守護霊・生まれつきの力」に由来します。今の『魔神』の語感は『千夜一夜物語』でアラビア語 jinni を génie と訳したことが広まったためで、関連語は genius。
