gestalt の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ドイツ語 Gestalt「形・姿」からで、語の奥には stellen「置く・配置する」がある。ばらばらの要素ではなく、配置されて立ち現れる“ひとまとまりの形”を指すので、全体像という意味につながる。関連語は install, stall。
Gestalt was borrowed directly from German Gestalt, meaning “form, shape, figure, or configuration.” The German word is historically connected with stellen, “to place or set,” reflecting the idea of something given an organized form. It entered English especially through Gestalt psychology, which examines how perception organizes separate elements into meaningful wholes. English normally retains the German spelling, though the noun can take the regular plural gestalts.
