「contravention」はラテン語 contra「反対に」+ venire「来る」+ -tion に由来し、原義は「何かに逆らって向かって来ること」。convene や intervene も同じ venire の仲間で、規則に正面からぶつかる動きがそのまま「違反」になった。
Contravention comes from Latin contra, meaning "against," and venire, meaning "to come," with the noun ending -tion. Its original sense was "a coming against" something. That image of moving directly against a rule or order developed into the idea of violation; convene and intervene also come from venire.
