contravene はフランス語経由で、後期ラテン語 contravenire「逆らって来る」に由来する。contra-「反対に」+ venire「来る」から、違反とは“規則の流れに向かって来てぶつかる”こと。convene や intervene も同じ venire を含む。
From Late Latin `contravenire`, through French, made from `contra-` meaning "against" and `venire` meaning "to come." The original sense was of coming against something. In English, that became the idea of acting against a rule, law, or accepted standard.
