A kingmaker is a person who has enough influence to decide who will gain power, especially in politics, even if they do not take the top position themselves. The word is often used for someone working behind the scenes.

kingmaker は king「王」+ maker「作る人」で、king は古英語 cyning、make は古英語 macian に由来します。kingly や bookmaker と同じ語根を持ち、文字どおり「王を作る人」から、表に出ず権力を動かす実力者の意味へ広がりました。
Kingmaker is made from king + maker. King comes from Old English cyning, and make comes from Old English macian. It first meant literally a person who helps put a king on the throne, then widened to mean any powerful person who can decide who rises to power.
