文法学者は言語の文法体系を研究する学者です。言語構造と規則の専門家です。
A grammarian is a person who studies grammar or knows a lot about it. The word can also mean someone who pays very close attention to correct language forms. It is used in language study and sometimes in a slightly critical way.

まず grammar（文法）が見えれば土台は十分です。そこに historian, librarian, musician などと同じ「その分野の人」を表す -ian が付いて、「文法の人」＝ grammarian と覚えると定着しやすいです。grammar teacher が授業をする人なのに対し、grammarian は文法そのものを研究・分析する専門家寄り。grammatical（文法上の）と並べて、grammar を核にした語族としてまとめて覚えると混同しにくくなります。

grammar は古フランス語 gramaire を経て、ラテン語 grammatica、さらにギリシャ語 grammatike（文字・文法の技術）にさかのぼります。そこに「〜の人」の -ian が付いた形で、grammar や grammatical と同根。文字を扱う学問の人だから「文法学者」です。
Grammarian comes from `grammar` plus the ending `-ian`, meaning "a person connected with something." `Grammar` came through Old French and Latin from Greek `grammatike`, the art of letters and writing. So the word originally meant a person concerned with letters and language, which later narrowed to a scholar of grammar.
