kiting は kite + 動名詞語尾 -ing で、kite は古英語 cyta、もとは空を舞う猛禽の「トビ」を指しました。kite や kitesurfing も同根で、鳥のように風を受けて浮くものだと考えると、「凧揚げ」の発想が腑に落ちます。
Kiting comes from kite with the ending -ing. Kite goes back to Old English cyta, originally the name of the bird called a kite, and it is related to later compounds like kitesurfing. Because the toy moved through the air like the bird, the bird's name was extended to the flying object, and kiting became the activity built from that.
