megalodon は学名ラテン語経由で、古代ギリシャ語 megas「大きい」＋ odon「歯」から成る語です。文字通り「巨大な歯」という意味で、見つかる化石の大きな歯がこのサメの決定的特徴だったことが、そのまま名前になっています。関連語は megaphone, orthodontist。
