kite「凧」は古英語 cyta にさかのぼり、もとは空を舞う猛禽の「トビ・カイト」を指しました。その鳥のように風に乗って浮く玩具へ意味が広がったので、「凧」という意味が納得しやすく、bird の kite も同じ語です。
Kite first meant a bird of prey in Old English, from the form cyta. Later, the name was also used for the flying toy because it seemed to float and move in the air like the bird. So the bird name came first, and the toy meaning grew from that image.
