grandstanding の語源・成り立ち Etymology
フランス語 grand(大きい、←ラテン語 grandis)と古英語 standan(立つ)の複合語。元は競技場の大観覧席を指し、転じて「観客受けを狙う派手な言動」の意に。関連語: grand(壮大な)、grandeur(威厳)。
Grandstanding comes from the verb grandstand plus the suffix -ing. Grandstand was formed from grand, ultimately from Latin grandis through French, and stand, from the Old English verb standan. The noun first referred to a large main structure containing spectator seats. From the idea of addressing or playing to spectators, the verb developed the critical sense “behave conspicuously to gain approval,” which produced the verbal noun grandstanding.
