野球で、地面を転がるように打たれたゴロの打球のこと。
A grounder is a ball that is hit or bounces along the ground in baseball or softball. It is different from a fly ball, which goes up into the air. This word is mainly used in sports commentary and game descriptions.

ground を見たらまず「地面」を思い出し、fly（フライ＝高く上がる打球）との対比で覚えると定着しやすいです。grounder は “ground を進むもの” なので、打球が空中ではなく下を這うイメージ。野球では ground ball に近く、a sharp grounder to shortstop のように「鋭いゴロ」の場面でよく出ます。-er は mixer, opener などと同じく「そういう性質のもの」を作る形。grounded と違って形容詞ではなく、あくまで打球名だと押さえると混同しにくいです。

grounder は ground「地面」+ -er「〜するもの」から成り、ground は古英語 grund「底・地」にさかのぼります。野球では『地面を行く球』だからこの名で、groundwork や underground と同じく『地に着く』感覚が核だと腑に落ちます。
