Mistreating means treating a person or animal badly, unfairly, or cruelly. It is used for harmful behavior such as abuse, neglect, or repeated unkind treatment.

mistreating は treat を軸に覚えると残りやすい。treat は「扱う・もてなす」なので、先頭に mis-（misunderstand, misjudge の mis- と同じ「悪く／誤って」）が付くと「ひどく扱う」。人や動物を目的語に取りやすく、mistreat children / animals の形が典型。abuse ほど暴力性を強調しない場面でも使え、「扱い方が間違っていて有害」という感覚で押さえると混同しにくい。

mistreating は古英語由来の mis-「悪く」と、古フランス語経由でラテン語 tractare「扱う」に由来する treat から成る語です。treat や treatment、さらに tract と同根で、「人を本来の扱い方から外れて扱う」と考えると、虐待する意味が腑に落ちます。
Mistreating combines mis- "badly" or "wrongly" with treat. Treat came through Old French from Latin tractare, meaning "to handle" or "to deal with." The word therefore grew from the idea of "handling someone wrongly," and later became the usual form for acting toward someone in an improper or harmful way.
