halo はラテン語 halos を経て、ギリシャ語 halōs に由来し、もとは「脱穀場」「円盤」を意味した。丸い円盤のイメージから、太陽や聖人の頭のまわりの輪を指すようになり、「後光・光輪」となった。関連語は haloed, halation。
