hasta の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語 hasta(槍・投げ槍)に由来。古代ローマでは競売の場に槍を立てる慣習があり、hasta publica は公売を意味した。関連語: hastate(槍形の、植物学用語)。槍という原義から武器や儀式の象徴として使われた語。

Hasta is borrowed directly from Latin hasta, “spear” or “lance.” In ancient Rome, the weapon also acquired ceremonial and legal associations: a spear could be set up at a public sale, reflected in the expression hasta publica for a public auction. The same Latin base appears in hastate, a botanical term for a leaf shaped like a spearhead. Beyond Latin, the word’s earlier origin is uncertain, so no firmer derivation is assumed.
