まず `high` と `light` に分けると覚えやすいです。細かい語源としてではなく、「光を当てて高く持ち上げ、そこだけ目立たせる」感覚でつかむと `強調する` に結びつきます。名詞の `highlight` は「見どころ・最も目立つ点」。`highlight key points` `highlight the problem` のように、重要点や問題点をはっきり浮かび上がらせる場面でよく使います。`emphasize` よりも、視覚的に目立たせる感じを伴いやすい語です。

high（高い）+ light（光）の複合語で、いずれも古英語 hēah と lēoht に由来する純粋なゲルマン系の語。元は絵画で明るく照らされた部分を指し、そこから「最も目立つ部分→強調する」へと意味が発展した。関連語に highlighter（蛍光ペン）、limelight（脚光）がある。
Highlight is a compound of high and light, both old Germanic words from Old English. It first referred to the brightest part in a painting, the place where light seems strongest. From that sense, it came to mean bringing something into special notice or emphasis.
