解説 Definition
histone は、DNAと結び付き、染色体の構造を作るたんぱく質「ヒストン」です。生物学や遺伝学で使われる専門用語です。
A histone is a protein that binds with DNA in the cell nucleus and helps package it into an organized, compact structure called chromatin. Chemical changes to histones can also influence whether nearby genes are active.
使い方 Usage
- 個々のヒストンには a histone、複数には histones を使います。DNA wrapped around histones は「ヒストンに巻き付いたDNA」です。 Use a histone for an individual histone and histones for more than one. DNA wrapped around histones describes DNA wound around these proteins.

The biological term histone was introduced in the late nineteenth century for basic proteins associated with material in cell nuclei. The ending -one appears in a number of scientific coinages but does not independently define the protein’s function here. Modern biology uses histone for proteins around which DNA is organized in chromatin.
