intelligentsiaはロシア語intelligentsiyaを経て、奥にラテン語intelligentia「理解する力」をもちます。inter-「間で」+ legere「選ぶ」が核で、intelligentやintellectと同根なので、「見分ける人々」から知識階級になった流れが見えます。
Intelligentsia entered English through Russian intelligentsiya, but its deeper root is Latin intelligentia, meaning understanding or intelligence. That Latin word is linked to inter- and legere, "to choose" or "pick out," giving the idea of being able to distinguish clearly. In Russian and then English, it came to mean the educated intellectual class. Related English words include intelligent and intellect.
