blankly は blank + -ly で、blank は古フランス語 blanc「白い、空白の」から来た語で、さらにゲルマン系にさかのぼります。blank や blanch も同根で、『白く抜けて中身がない』感覚から、表情や視線が空白のように『ぼんやりと』という意味になりました。
`Blankly` comes from `blank` plus the adverb ending `-ly`. `Blank` came through Old French `blanc`, meaning "white," and later "empty" or "without marks." From the idea of a white, empty space, English developed the sense of looking or speaking with no expression or clear thought.
