An intelligencer is a person who collects and gives information, especially secret or useful information. The word is often used in politics, security, or older writing. It can also refer to someone or something that reports news or intelligence.

intelligence をまず「知能」だけでなく「情報・諜報」の意味でも持っておくと覚えやすい語です。military intelligence, gather intelligence のような表現を知っていれば、そこに -er が付いて「情報を扱う人」と自然に取れます。intelligent（頭のいい）に引っぱられすぎないのがコツ。informer は密告者の響きが強い一方、intelligencer は秘密情報を集めて渡す人物、つまり諜報寄りの語感で整理すると混同しにくくなります。
Start from `intelligence`, which can mean secret information, not only brain power. Add `-er`, and you get a person who handles or passes that information. Do not let `intelligent` pull you too strongly in the "smart person" direction. It is closer to the world of espionage than the everyday word `informer`.
