horizontally は horizontal + -ly。horizontal は horizon「地平線」に由来し、空と地の境のように横へ伸びる線から「横向きの」という意味になった。
Horizontally comes from horizontal + -ly. Horizontal comes from horizon, which originally referred to the line where the earth and sky seem to meet. From that idea of a line stretching across, it came to mean "side-to-side" or "level."
