howdy は how do ye?「ご機嫌いかが？」が縮まった挨拶で、how + do + ye とほどけます。親類には How do you do? があり、もとは相手の健康や調子をたずねる文でした。だから軽い「やあ」に見えて、実は相手を気づかう響きが芯に残っています。
Howdy developed from the greeting phrase "How do ye?" This expression was later shortened in speech until it became a single informal word. Its history is related to "How do you do?," which originally sounded more like asking about a person's condition than a simple greeting.
